Mick Renshaw is Adding Further Structure to OSL's Services
OSL has reached some major milestones over the last few years, including moving into owned premises in 2013, becoming a Silver Corporate Partner of the IChemE, and recently seeing our team increase to almost 70 multi-disciplined professionals. The most recent development that is having a significant positive impact on our customers is the formation of a new department, specialising in Civil and Structural Engineering.
Heading up the team is Mick Renshaw, a Chartered Structural Engineer with vast contractor and consultancy experience in the oil, gas, petrochemical and heavy engineering industries. Having previously worked as the Lead Structural Engineer and Engineering Manager, Mick has now been tasked with developing an in-house capability in his focus area as part of OSL’s expansion plans. As a result, we are also no longer reliant on outside subcontractors for certain services like laser scanning, allowing OSL to supply a fully integrated service to new and existing customers.
Mick said: “Whilst at Wood Group, I built the Structural team to over fifteen specialists. I’m now working on achieving the same at OSL, with our first addition being Jon Chambers, a Senior Civil and Structural Designer.”
Structural engineering is a crucial part of detailed design and FEED studies. By offering the service to our customers, we can guarantee full consistency and continuity whilst enabling company growth and development. Key applications of this new capability include offshore platforms, topside modifications, rigging and installation, fabric maintenance and repair orders.
“Our new team’s projects are extremely varied,” added our new Lead Civil and Structural Engineer, “ranging from pipe racks to storage and temporary accommodation. What remains constant is the skill, innovation and problem-solving expertise that goes into every undertaking.”
Mick is currently working on a platform extension as part of a major strategic project. This will open up additional space whilst guaranteeing optimum safety and ease of access, simultaneously strengthening the facility and evolving the way the site operates. A firm believer of having to see and assess a setup in order to deliver a smart, cost-effective and practical plan, Mick makes regular site visits to discuss requirements and expectations with our customers.
“By working in situ as well as from OSL House, the Structural Engineering team is committed to taking tasks of all shapes and sizes in hand and creating quality solutions in a timely fashion.
Mick was born in Manchester and studied at Sheffield Hallam University and later Salford University Business School (BEng Hons Civil Engineering and MSc Project Management, respectively). He now lives in Grimsby and makes the short commute to Hull via the Humber Bridge, another excellent example of Yorkshire-based structural engineering.
