Attract, Train and Retain
OSL are consulting engineers and project managers to the gas and oil industry, specialising in gas storage and compression, small scale LNG, minimum facilities and flow assurance, but with a skills set that covers a wide spectrum of “life of field” engineering and design support. With offices in Aberdeen and Great Yarmouth, their headquarters are based in Hull, East Yorkshire, which regularly sees budding professionals joining the team for experience, training and employment.
“We’re a member of ACTS,” explained Alastair Robertson, Principal Director at OSL (pictured), “the IChemE’s Accredited Company Training Scheme. The focus is to attract, train and retain young engineers, making their career path as smooth and fulfilling as possible.”
The forward-thinking company, which is constantly involved in providing engineering solutions to various projects both across the UK and abroad, is also a supporter of BEEP (Business, Enterprise and Education Partnership), bringing schools and companies together to promote careers to young people. In the last year, OSL has welcomed a student from Caistor Grammar School on day release, a summer placement, a one-year internship from Bradford University’s engineering department, and most recently a work experience pupil sponsored by the ECITB from the Arkwright Foundation, which helps aspiring engineers. All this is on top of the annual graduate intake.
“We welcome young people who share our passion for clever thinking to see how initial concepts grow and become reality. Their role in the office caters to their needs and level of knowledge, so they truly do get as much out of their time with the OSL team as possible.”
OSL has recruited over ten new staff in the last twelve months, ranging from graduate engineers to project administration specialists and experienced multidisciplined engineers.
Alastair said: “The demand for quality engineering skills continues to increase, and we have been busy recruiting staff and contract engineers to meet the requirements of our customers. Our rigorous recruitment process and accredited training scheme allows us to bring new people into the company with confidence, and then develop their skills in the best way possible and guide them towards achieving chartered status or continuing their professional development.”
“Every member of the team knows that our combined efforts provide the solution to any problem, and we’re delighted that many consultants and project managers of the future begin their journey with OSL.”
