Putting Graduates on the Path to Success

Resourcing Manager Sarah Taylor regularly visits schools, colleges and universities to give budding engineers an insight into the industry. September saw a trip to Hull University to support the Energy Institute during Freshers Week, which included the EI explaining the benefits of membership. This was followed in early October by a presentation to final year students of Chemical, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering courses, focusing on employability skills.

At the end of October, Hull University’s Careers and Employability Service ran a Graduate Fair, which consisted of dozens of companies coming together to help newly graduated alumni discover potential career paths. We’re delighted to report that the day was a huge success, with over a hundred expressions of interest at our stand. Many of those who came to see us had attended one of the aforementioned events, which shows how switched on Hull University’s students are when it comes to using their initiative. Even more impressive was how much research some graduates had put into OSL’s background and services, combined with a range of intelligent questions regarding how to take their first steps toward landing attractive roles in the energy sector. 

Graduate Process Engineer Josh Ojera joined Sarah at the event and gave first-hand knowledge of how graduates can work with OSL. Part of this was an explanation of how we collaborate with the IChemE through its Accredited Company Training Scheme (ACTS), providing a framework for continued personal development alongside mentorship from an experienced team member, such as Principal Director Alastair Robertson. We also gave visitors to our stand full information on what OSL look for in candidates, how to apply, and career guidance for all types of roles, from office-based designers to onsite professionals. 

Sarah said: “We met many bright young engineers and engaged in dozens of conversations about how to land the perfect position in the energy sector. It was an incredibly valuable event for everyone involved.”

As a result of the Graduate Fair, OSL now has a more comprehensive bank of graduates that we can help on a wide spectrum, ranging from advice and mentoring to summer placements and internships. This would not have been possible without the excellent work of the Hull University Careers and Employability Service, who organised a very successful showcase that got the attention of large numbers of proactive graduates.
